I Stopped Trying to Have the “Perfect” Day as a Mom

When I first became a mom, I thought a good day needed to look organized.

Everyone dressed.

The house reasonably tidy.

Meals prepared.

A little walk outside.

Maybe even time to answer messages and drink my coffee while it was still warm.

It sounded reasonable.

Then I actually had a baby.

Some mornings, getting both of us ready felt like the main event of the day.

I would start cleaning one thing, get distracted by something else, come back twenty minutes later, and completely forget what I had originally been doing.

Eventually, I realized I was putting way too much pressure on ordinary days.

So I changed the definition of a “good day.”

Now I Pick Three Things

Instead of making a huge list, I usually choose three things I would like to get done.

Sometimes they’re practical:

Put away the laundry.

Go outside for a little while.

Prepare something for tomorrow.

Sometimes they are incredibly simple:

Take a shower.

Reply to one message.

Sit down for ten minutes.

Anything else I finish is a bonus.

It sounds small, but this little habit made my days feel much lighter.

I Prepare Things Where I Actually Use Them

Another thing that made daily life easier was stopping myself from organizing everything based on how the house looked.

Now I organize things based on where I actually need them.

A small basket of baby essentials stays where we spend most of our time.

Things we regularly take outside stay close to the door.

Items we use every day stay within easy reach instead of hidden away because they look prettier in a drawer.

It’s not always magazine-worthy.

But it works.

And right now, “works” is one of my favorite words.

I Leave Earlier Than I Think I Need To

Before having a baby, leaving the house meant putting on shoes and grabbing my bag.

Now there can be an entire unexpected storyline between deciding to leave and actually walking out the door.

So if I think we need fifteen minutes, I give us thirty.

If we’re ready early, amazing.

If something unexpected happens, we still have time.

This has probably saved me from more stressful mornings than anything else.

I’m Learning to Let a Good Day Be Simple

Some days we go somewhere fun.

Some days we stay home.

Some days everything goes according to plan.

Some days absolutely nothing does.

I used to feel like I needed to make every day productive.

Now I think a good day can simply be a day where we laughed together, got through what needed to be done, and ended the day feeling okay.

Motherhood already comes with enough moving pieces.

I don’t need to turn every ordinary Tuesday into a performance.

Sometimes simple really is enough.
